How to Start A House Cleaning Business In 7 Simple Steps
How to Start A House Cleaning Business In 7 Simple Steps

One of the main reasons people start businesses is to make money. For some it's a blessing to make money doing something they love. I'm not saying that you have to love house cleaning in order to have a successful house cleaning business; however it would be a good idea if you didn't hate it.

Cleaning Service

How much money you make depends on how big you want your business to be. It could be a one person operation where you set up at home and service areas close to home, or you could set up a commercial office and hire people to work for you.

How to Start A House Cleaning Business In 7 Simple Steps

Here are 7 simple steps to get you started on your own house cleaning business.

1) Decide exactly what kind of house cleaning services you will offer.

Here you decided what cleaning you will do, like making beds, vacuuming, mopping and waxing floors, dusting and so on. Also note what you won't do, e.g. laundry. You can also decide to specialize, e.g. by cleaning carpets only, or cleaning suspended ceilings only.

2) Pricing your housecleaning service.

To have an idea of how to charge for your housecleaning service, use your competition. Check your telephone directory and the classified ads section in your local newspapers for cleaning businesses, call them up (pretend to be a prospective client) and find out exactly what cleaning services they offer and how much they charge. With this information gathered decide the best price to charge for your cleaning service.

3) Workout startup costs.

For this you need to consider, tools, material, transport, advertising, insurance etc. Write down a list all the tools and material you need, like cleaners, sponges, mops, carpet cleaning equipment etc. Next find out the cost of each item on the list and write it down next to the item.

Transport: you will have to estimate your costs here. You see it depends on where your client is located and your means of transportation to get to your client. (Having your own vehicle would be to your advantage).

Advertising: You can use free advertising (word of mouth) and paid advertising (classifieds, telephone directory ads etc). Phone calls to your local newspaper and the telephone company who publish your telephone directory will tell you the cost of placing ads.

Once you've gathered all this information, calculate your total startup costs.

4) Name your business.

Choosing an appropriate name for your house cleaning business is important. Here are a few examples I got of the internet, 'Maid Brigade', 'All Shine Cleaning', 'White Glove Cleaning Service'. Please avoid using 'Your Name Cleaning Services'. Using your own name as part of your business name is over done by many house cleaning businesses. Brainstorm and come up with a name that helps you stand out of the crowd.

5) Learn the zoning regulations of your community.

Check the city clerk's Office or your local library for a copy for a copy of the zoning laws governing your community. Your reason for doing this is that some zoning regulations prohibit home businesses in a community.

Well you're not actually doing them for free. You're doing them in exchange for references (these add to your credibility for future paying clients and are invaluable). You can offer these free cleaning jobs to friends, non profit organizations in your communities etc.

7) Get your first paying client then get another and another and another and so on.

Tell everyone you know that you've started a cleaning business and place ads in the local newspapers. In the beginning you need to spend most of your time and money getting paying clients. However, the more clients you get the less time and money you spend on marketing and more time you spend on cleaning and making your clients happy.

This is just the beginning. Once you start making money take a house cleaning business course to help you better manage your business in terms of growth, accounting, taxes, insurance better marketing strategies and more.

The Statue of David by Michelangelo
The Statue of David by Michelangelo

The Statue of David was sculpted during a three year period beginning in 1501 by the artist Michelangelo. The subject of the work is the Biblical King David in the moment that he makes the decision to fight Goliath. The seventeen foot tall statue became the symbol of defending the civic liberties of the Florentine Republic, an area surrounded by more powerful states and the powerful Medici family. The sculpture originally stood outside the seat of government in Florence, the Palazzo della Signoria.

Drapery Cleaning Service

Michelangelo wasn't the original artist of the sculpture. A group of officials sought to commission a twelve sculptures based on the Old Testament to grace decorate a cathederal. The first two were completed by Donatello and Agostino di Duccio, his assistant. The buyers contacted di Duccio to create the work of David. He shaped the legs, feet and figure and began to do some drapery work before he left the projects, possibly due to the death of Donatello. Antonio Rossellino took over the sculpting product but he was essentially fired.

The Statue of David by Michelangelo

The partially altered chunk of marble sat that way for the next twenty five years in the yard of a workshop. The block of marble became smaller due to exposure to the elements. The deterioration of their pricey investment was enough for the group of buyers to restart the process of finding an artist. Various artists were interviewed for the task, including Leonardo da Vinci, but Michelangelo was finally hired in 1501.

David is thought to be preparing for battle since the body of Goliath is not included and the young man's body is tense and ready for action. There are bulging veins in his hand and a twisting in his body. But there are those who think it shows him in the moments after his victory, when he is contemplating his victory.

The statue is standing in the contrapposto pose that prevailed during the High Renaissance. His weight is shifted onto his right leg while the left is relaxed. To balance that out, his left arm is in motion (holding the rock) while his right hangs to his side. It is a very naturalistic stance. The pedestal of marble below him is treated as though it were something he just stepped up onto.

His proportions aren't as realistic. The head and upper region of the body are larger than the lower parts of the body. The hands are also disproportionately large. The proportions are defended by experts as being accurate for the original intended home of the statue, high up on a church where the body's ratio would have looked accurate. There is some controversy surrounding the fact that the David in the statue is not circumcised when the real life king would have been.

A vandal attacked the statue in 1991, damaging some of the toes on the left foot with a hammer before he was restrained. The first serious cleaning of the statue since 1843 happened in 2003 with no damage done to the statue although there were concerns by many scholars before hand.

How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage
How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage

Regardless if you hire professional movers or do it yourself, it is good to know how to wrap the furniture and what to expect. We sell moving supplies and often hear questions: - How many moving blankets do I need? Which moving blanket should I use and how do I wrap my furniture?

Professional Mattress Cleaners

The way to wrap furniture for moving depends on specifics of your move. Is it interstate move, across the country, or local moving around the block? Loading PODS or international shipping container, or moving to long term storage?

How to Wrap Furniture for Moving and Storage

If you are getting ready to move and concerned about safely moving your household goods this series of articles will show in details how to wrap your furniture for any large or small move. People sometimes underestimate amount of packing required for a moving job, but it is important to pack your personal belongings properly. I have been in the moving business for over 20 years, moved hundreds of families personally as a foreman and driver, and then thousands more as an owner of a moving company, both moving locally and moving interstate. I was teaching my movers the best and most efficient ways of handling and wrapping furniture, wrapping with blankets, crating, boxing, you name it.

Movers. Contrary to some statements I came across in other articles, Movers do care about your shipment, in most cases foreman is personally responsible to pay for your damages and movers also know that if something gets broken it is unlikely that they get any tips. At the same time movers do not have any sentimental attachment to your belongings and treat precious to you items as anything else. Their main goal is to secure the goods in a way that it will not break and will be easy to load. Therefore it is important to make a foreman (moving crew leader) which items require special care.

Do not expect movers to see your household goods the way you see it. The movers simply do not have time to consider how delicate each and every item might be. For example a bottle with exotic sand, layered by the color or even in a special design, will be ruined if simply laid on its side. Movers will make sure to pack the bottle that it will be safe, but they might not realize that the sand layers inside the bottle are not fixed and might mix into an ugly mess from vibration in the truck. It is true that most damage occurs while carrying, loading and unloading, but it is also true that if movers (or yourself) do not load the truck properly some items will get damaged in transit.

Word of caution about shopping for a moving company: If you have valuable furniture to move - do not look for cheap movers, look for good ones. Inexperienced movers or movers with bad reputation compete on price, not on professionalism. Good movers deserve to be paid well. As the saying goes - you get what you paid for.

Moving Packing Supplies. There is variety of packing supplies available: bubble sleeves, plate cell packing kits, foam peanuts, bubble craft etc. We are not trying to cover 100% of the packing supplies, but only the most popular that are used by movers and that you can and should expect to find in a moving truck: Blankets, Boxes, paper, bubble wrap and Shrink wrap, plastic covers. With this set of supplies you can pack and move any type of furniture, china or artwork.

Moving Blankets. Moving blankets is mover's "tool of the trade". If you are moving locally and hiring a professional moving company you should expect them to show up with blankets and you should not be charged for it. But if you are moving long distance (interstate moving) or to storage, then purchasing your own moving blankets might be a good idea. Moving Blankets can be of two major kinds: Quilted or padded moving blankets and Non-Quilted,, also called Skins or Space Savers. Each has its use. Quilted Moving blankets usually come in 72 x 80 inches size and differ depending on the outer fabric and amount of filler, the heavier the blankets the more filer they have and the more protection they offer. Cheap moving blankets are made with nonwoven outer fabric and very light filler. These blankets can be very good if you are planning to place your stuff in long term storage or a small move.

Economy moving blankets provide adequate protection and do not take much room in the storage. For long distance or interstate moving where interstate carrier charges by weight the advantage is that these blankets are much lighter than regular moving blankets. For heavy solid wood furniture, leather couches, heavy dining tables etc. it is better to get heavier, thicker blankets that will provide better protection against bumps and dents. If you move often, moving blankets with woven outer fabric much more durable moving blankets and will serve much longer. Non-quilted moving blankets can be made out of felt or burlap on one side and felt on the other. These should not be discounted especially if your main concern the furniture rubbing against each other. If you are packing your own pod, or container - you can use space savers with great success.

Another option is paper moving blankets. Paper packing blankets are constructed of two outer layers of brown kraft and three inner layers of light weight paper. The three inner layers can consist of newsprint, light weight kraft, tissue, bogus, or non woven papers. Most people are not even aware of paper blankets to be used for moving, meanwhile it is a very good alternative to quilted moving blankets, especially if you are moving only once or sending your goods to a long term storage or moving overseas. Paper blankets are breathable, provide good protection and 100% recyclable.

Boxes. Moving boxes can be single wall, such as Book boxes, Linen boxes etc. or double wall, such as China Boxes, TV boxes, Wardrobe boxes etc. Double wall boxes are much stronger and hold more weight. But please DO NOT try to load them to capacity. Loading Wardrobe box full of books is not a good idea. Name of the box is very suggestive: Book boxes (1.5 cubic feet) are for books, Small Linen boxes (3.1 c.f.) or Large Linen boxes (4.5 c.f.) are for folded clothes, towels and linen, China boxes, 5,.2 c.f. is for fragile items, and wardrobe box ( come in 10.1 c.f. or 15 c.f. and 4 ft tall) is for hanging clothes. And of course there are picture boxes, lamp boxes, mattress boxes and a whole line of all kinds of specialized boxes, corners etc.

Cushioning Materials. When you pack fragile items in a box - you need something to provide cushioning. Most popular is Bubble wrap and Blank newsprint. Blank newsprint or white paper comes in 5, 10 or 25 lbs bundles. Blank newsprint is the best for packing kitchenware, plates, china, fragile items, or simply filling empty spaces in a box. Bubble wrap come in 12 or 24 inch wide rolls and with various bubble sizes. Movers mostly use 0.5 inch bubble wrap 24 inches wide. Bubble wrap is good for wrapping electronics or large pieces of glass.

Plastic Covers. Plastic covers for moving would include Shrink wrap or stretch wrap and Plastic mattress cover, plastic sofa cover or plastic chair covers. Shrink wrap - is widely used in shipping to keep a load on a pallet together as one unit and not to allow it to fall apart or items disappear from shipment. In moving furniture shrink wrap was originally used to keep items with small parts or opening doors or drawers together. Then it became a substitute for plastic covers to wrap mattresses. It is not at all better than a plastic mattress cover, but it is more profitable for a moving company: it cost much less to buy a roll of shrink wrap, but it takes longer to wrap plus mover can charge more for each item wrapped. Movers might even wrap shrink wrap on top of furniture already wrapped in blankets. It looks good, but it is very expensive and absolutely useless. If you put your items to storage shrink wrap is actually damaging to the furniture, because it traps the moisture and the furniture can actually rot under the shrink wrap if stored long enough. I would strongly recommend using mattress covers, because even if it will be wrapped in a blanket - you do not know what was wrapped in that blanket before. And mattress is what you sleep on. Also sofas with light colored upholstery would be better off if you cover it with plastic sofa cove before wrapping in the furniture blankets. Sometimes the color bleeds off the moving blanket onto upholstery.

SUMMARY: When preparing for the move consider specifics of your move and consider the furniture you want to wrap. Need to save space? - Get space savers or paper blankets, need better protection - get premium quality thick moving blankets. Want to keep your fragile safe - pack them in double wall strong boxes with a lot of cushioning materials Want your keep furniture clean - use Plastic furniture covers. In the next article we will go over specifics of wrapping various items of furniture.

Cleaning A Mattress
Cleaning A Mattress

You know that phrase "out of sight, out of mind"? Well, it applies to your mattress. Because your mattress is usually covered by sheets, comforters, pillows, quilts, dogs, clothes, people, etc. it isn't necessarily the first item on your list of things to clean. This article will provide you with some easy tips on both how to keep your mattress clean and how to clean your mattress when it gets dirty.

Mattress Cleaning

Keeping your mattress clean

Cleaning A Mattress

The first thing to be said about cleaning a mattress is do what you can to keep your mattress clean. The more disciplined you are with what happens in or around your bed, the less cleaning you will end up doing. That means that you will want to avoid eating and drinking while in your bed. you will also want to avoid letting pets sleep on your bed. While it may not seem like much, keeping animals, food, and drinks away from your mattress will greatly reduce the chances of spills and accidents. The more spills and accidents you can avoid the less you will have to worry about cleaning your mattress. In cases where mattresses are at a higher risk for spills or accidents (in a child's room for example) then you may want to consider a mattress bag or mattress liner/cover. Such mattress covers are typically placed below the sheets and help to prevent liquids from seeping into the mattress. Most covers can be purchased for - and are usually durable enough to last a couple years. You may also want to consider a washable mattress pad. Costing 0 - 0, washable pads are considerably more expensive than plastic liners or covers, but are more durable and comfortable, and help protect against both solid and liquid spills.
Cleaning Up

Given how much time we spend in or on our beds it's inevitable that accidents happen. However, if you are prepared for such accidents, then when they do occur you will be able to take care of them quickly and reduce the chance that your mattress will be permanently stained or damaged.

If the spill or accident involves liquid (i.e. urine, vomit, drinks, etc.) then the first thing you will need to do is blot the spill. Using a clean, dry towel or rag, apply as much weight as you can on the spill (you can even try standing on the towel/rag). Do not rub the spill! Rubbing liquid spills does not allow the towel or rag to absorb as much of the liquid and can cause the stain to seep deeper into the material. Continue blotting until the spill is slightly damp to the touch. Once you've removed the bulk of the liquid then you are ready to apply a cleaner. The cleaner you apply will depend on the liquid that was involved in the spill or accident. For organic spills (urine, vomit, juices) you will want an enzymatic cleaner or a 50/50 solution of lemon juice or vinegar and cold water. Enzymatic cleaners work by breaking down the peptide bonds in the proteins of the liquid. They can be found at your local grocery store and usually cost - . Most non-organic spills can be taken care of by common spray upholstery cleaners. Once you've decided on which cleaner will work best for your situation, spray, not pour, the cleaner on the mattress. Pouring a cleaner onto your mattress can yield the same results as the initial accident, as the cleaner can seep into the mattress's material. After lightly spraying the spot, blot the cleaner with a new, clean, dry towel. Once the area has been thoroughly blotted again, sprinkle some baking soda over the area. The baking soda will both help to absorb the remaining moisture and will help eliminate odors as the area dries up. While you will want to leave the baking soda on for longer the larger the stain is, we recommend at least 8 - 10 hours. Once the baking soda has had time to do its job, vacuum it off of your mattress and continue using it as normal.

In cases where your mattress is submerged in water (i.e. a flood) or is exposed to a moist environment for long periods of time, the steps to get the mattress are going to be quite different. First and foremost, when mattresses get wet they can (and often do) develop mold. This mold is usually not visible and can pose serious health risks. Because you likely spend 8 or more hours in or on your bed a day you are putting yourself at risk to be inhaling mold spores. These spores can make you sick and in some cases can actually kill you. That said, if you have the means to replace a mattress that has been exposed to large amounts of liquid do it! Spending a few hundred dollars to replace a mattress may save you thousands in mold related medical expenses down the road. If your mattress starts to smell a little musty then chances are that it has developed some mold/mildew. When this happens you will need to kill the mildew. Using a light bleach solution spray and blot the mattress, then let the mattress dry in the sun. While the bleach and sun will help to kill the mold you may want to consider running a humidifier in the room to help prevent new mildew from growing.

For spills that involve solids (chips, cookie crumbs, etc) you will need to first pick up the large pieces. Once you've gotten those out of the way vacuum up the smaller pieces. If there was any staining from the spill then spray the area with an appropriate cleaner (we talked about finding the right cleaner above) and blot the sprayed area with a clean, dry towel or rag. If there is any lingering odor once the area has been sprayed and blotted then sprinkle it with baking soda, let the baking soda sit for 8 - 10 hours (or longer for bigger spills) and vacuum the area clean.

There are also a number of good mattress cleaning solutions that are available for purchase in retail locations and online. You may want to take a look at Butler's Secret and ProKlean (although we've heard horror stories about their customer service). You can also always contact the mattress's manufacturer to get additional cleaning and maintenance tips!
Clean Mattress Maintenance

Most mattresses are designed to be used for 5, 10, 20 years or more. With that much use there are a few things you can do to keep your mattress smelling fresh. One of the simplest things you can do to keep your mattress fresh is to change the sheets regularly. By changing your sheets regularly you will prevent dust mites, dander, and dead skin cells from making their way through the fabric of the sheet and into your mattress. A second simple maintenance procedure is to vacuum the surface each time you flip your mattress. When vacuuming make sure you use the hose with either no attachment or the hard surface attachment (that does not have a brush).

If your mattress starts to smell a little stale there are a couple things you can do. First, you can lightly clean the mattress's surface with a lemon scented upholstery cleaner or with a 50/50 lemon juice and cold water solution. The surface should be lightly sprayed and then blotted dry. A second step you can take is to place a few dryer sheets underneath the sheets and other bedding. Dryer sheets are not a perfect or long term solution, but they can provide some temporary relief. If you or someone you share the room with start to experience headaches, you will want to try a new scent. If there is a residual smell from cigarette or cigar smoke, sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress, let it sit overnight and then vacuum clean.

We hope that this guide has been useful! Best of luck getting your mattress cleaning and keeping it that way!

The Best Type of Replacement Windows

The Best Type of Replacement Windows
The Best Type of Replacement Windows

If you are looking for the best type of replacement windows then you have come to the right place. I will provide you with very useful information that you can use to make the right decision as you start your window replacement project.

Drapery Cleaning Service

There are many ways of approaching this question of the best type of replacement windows. I will try and cover all the important aspects of it. That is, the best brands, best type in terms of make and functionality. Read it before you get scammed by an unscrupulous sales rep.

The Best Type of Replacement Windows

Energy efficient windows

If you are looking for the windows that will save you thousands on bills then your best type should be one that does a good job at energy saving. There are many brands like Amerimax but the best way to find one that will work for you is to use ratings. The best rating methods that are available today are the NFCR and the Energy star rating.

Durability

If you are planning to stay in that house for a long time then you probably are thinking about finding the best type of replacement windows that are durable. Well there are many brands that feature here - a few that comes to mind include Pella, Andersons, milgard to name a few. In previous articles I have written about top brands in terms if durability.

Storm Windows

To find the best type of windows that resist wind you need to find AAMA air infiltration rating or NFRC, which I highlighted earlier on. So if you are looking for the best type of storm replacement windows then think along wooden windows because they can easily be repaired.

Vinyl storm windows tend to get messed up pretty quickly. They then start leaking and get an ugly look that cheapens the house. Of course there are other options to explore here. Brands to consider here include Hurd, Marvin or Amerimax to name just a few.

Part of the house

Different windows work are good for different parts of the house. For example when talking about the best type of kitchen replacement windows then you need to think along casement windows. This is because kitchen windows must be airy. For the lounge you may need to consider bay windows and you can get yourself Milgard Vinyl for the back areas of the house

You also need to consider the best type of replacement windows that work well when cleaning e.g. tilt-in, double hung and if you want to take out the sashes and frames then your best type may be a full frame replacement window.
